Walk to School Day is an international event that reminds everyone of the simple joy of walking to school, the health benefits of an active lifestyle, and the sense of community that comes with being out together.

Did you know that Spartanburg County enjoys the most successful Walk To School Day Program in the state? Last year, thirty-one schools throughout the seven Spartanburg Districts participated in Walk To School Day, achieving the highest participation of any County in the state.

Walk to School Day 2007 is scheduled for Wednesday, October 3rd

Your local organizers - Partners for Active Living, DHEC Region 2, and Safe Kids – are again joining forces with the South Carolina Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity (SCCPPA) to provide tools, tips, resources and incentives to assist you in planning and implementing events at your school. Chartwells will also be a partner in the Walk to School Day initiative. Please contact your District Foodservice Director for information on specific breakfast or snack options that will be available during this event.

To receive WTSD items from SCCPPA, you must register your school at www.walktoschool.org. The deadline for registration is September 10th. Once registered, your school will receive planning materials and incentive items from SCCPPA and will be eligible to compete in our local Golden Shoe Award (1st place -$500 cash, 2nd place- $300 cash, 3rd place- $200 cash). Award details will be outlined in a later e-mail.

Participation in Walk to School Day does NOT require that your students actually walk to school. Events that allow children to walk at school can demonstrate the importance of having a healthy, active lifestyle. Please join us in walking for a healthier, safer and more active Spartanburg!

Criteria for the Golden Shoe Award:

  1. Celebration of WTSD served as a catalyst for the establishment of sustainable physical activity programs within the school.
  2. Other school and community groups encouraged to participate in the planning and implementation of the WTSD events (ie. PTO, public safety, student athletes from surrounding colleges/schools, public officials).
  3. Parents invited to participate in the WTSD event.
  4. Other school activities creatively incorporated into the WTSD festivities (ie. poster contest, safety assembly, walking banners made by each class).
