Girls on the Run of Spartanburg

Girls on the Run is an after school self-esteem and running program for 3rd-8th grade girls. Their mission is to "prepare girls for a lifetime of self respect and healthy living" by addressing the development of the whole girl - physical, emotional, mental, and social.
Girls on the Run practices for 75 minutes, two times per week for 11 weeks. They are led by a head volunteer coach, who is trained in GOTR curriculum, and 2-3 other volunteer coaches who are either staff, teachers, or parents of a girl in the program. There is a fee to participate; however, scholarships are available and cover most of the cost. At the end of the 11 weeks, girls participate in a community 5K walk/run to celebrate their completion of the program. Girls will run with a 'running buddy' who is either a family friend or a community volunteer.
Girls on Track is a similar program, targeted towards girls in grades 5-8. The lessons are a little more 'grown-up' and discuss topics like relationships and eating disorders.
