HISTORY Partners for Active Living is a community-based initiative in Spartanburg, SC. Targeting an increase in physical activity and improved health of Spartanburg residents, we advocate and pursue the creation of activity friendly environments and promote active lifestyles.
With significant local funding from the Mary Black Foundation, Partners for Active Living was founded in October 2000 as a program of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Foundation called HeartWise. Supported by Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Foundation and the YMCA of Greater Spartanburg, HeartWise developed a strategic outlook and sustainable programs of work such as Safe Routes to School, Walking and Bicycling Suitability Assessments and Leadership Education. By January 2004, the HeartWise program incorporated as a non–profit organization called Partners for Active Living.
