Partners for Active Living wants to put more people on bikes more often. And here's how we're doing it...
Purpose
Hub Cycle is a program of Partners for Active Living designed to increase the availability of and access to bicycles in Spartanburg. Through this program, we hope to increase the number of people using bicycles for transportation and recreation, and the number of trips taken by bike in Spartanburg County.
How does it work?
Partners for Active Living accepts donations of new or used bicycles for the program. Each donation is tax-deductible. The used bicycles are repaired to safe and ride-able condition by our Lead Mechanic, Miguel Espina, who has more than 12 years as a professional bike mechanic and bike store manager. Once ready for use, the bikes are made available to the public for free, long-term lending.
Borrowing a Bike
Bicycles of Hub Cycle can be borrowed for a period of up to 3 months (or 90 days) and a helmet and lock are included with each bike. A $15 deposit is required and will be returned in full when the bike is returned.
Returning a Bike
At the end of the 90 day period, the bike, lock and helmet can be returned in exchange for the deposit amount OR it can be renewed for another 3 months, at no additional cost (no fee and no additional deposit).
Bike Selection
Because of the nature of the program, the selection of bikes is based on bike donations. While we will continue to work to find new donations, bike availability is not guaranteed. Hub Cycle volunteers will make every effort to find a type and size bike that fits the interests and needs of the borrower, based on what is available.
Volunteering
Hub Cycle encourages volunteers for bike maintenance and repair. Supporters are invited to join us during the regular workshop hours.
Requirements
To borrow a Hub Cycle bike, the borrower must be 18 years of age or older, must sign the waiver and release, must agree to wear a helmet every time they ride, and must pay the deposit amount.

What do we hope to accomplish?
· Recycling used bicycles
· Offering free, long-term bike lending
· Teaching bike safety and on-road skills to beginner riders
· Teaching bike safety, maintenance and repiar to those willing to learn
· Encouraging more people to bicycle for exercise and leisure
· Providing a viable transportation option for those without access to a car
How do you borrow a bike?
The offices of Partners for Active Living are directly above the Hub Cycle shop, so our staff would be happy to help you during normal office hours. We ask, however, that you call or e-mail ahead to arrange a pick-up time so that we can be sure someone will be available. Normal business hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and you can set up an appointment by emailing info@active-living.org or call Jean Crow at 864.598.9638.
How can you help?
Donate your used bike to Hub Cycle or volunteer your time to help fix up the bikes!
All Donations are Tax-Deductible!
