Childhood obesity is a health risk that threatens the future of more than a third of young people in Spartanburg County. According to the South Carolina Department of Health, 34 percent of Spartanburg County youth are overweight or obese. And across the nation, obesity rates have tripled over the past 30 years. Doctors say the trend means that for the first time in history, American children face a shorter life expectancy than their parents.

Partner for Active Living, which is a member of Spartanburg’s Childhood Obesity Taskforce and a Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities grant recipient, is working to reverse those trends by increasing access to safe, high-quality active living spaces.
